Job Description
Our State is hiring an editorial assistant to join our award-winning team. The editorial assistant will provide administrative support for the editorial department and perform various writing and editing duties, working closely with the managing editor and the rest of our small team. As a staff member, you will be an integral part of one of the most prestigious and fastest-growing magazines in the South. We are a 100 percent employee-owned company, and our culture is fun, casual, and collaborative. This role will have a hybrid work schedule, and the editorial assistant will need to be in the office in Greensboro at least two days a week.
Duties include:
• Making travel arrangements for editors and contributors
• Collecting and reconciling contracts and invoices from writers
• Tracking the monthly editorial budget
• Conducting research for upcoming stories
• Managing and responding to letters, calls, and emails from readers, freelancers, and public relations professionals
• Archiving stories in each issue
• Communicating with writers and sources for editorial marketing
• Writing and editing certain sections of the magazine each month
• Participating in the editorial process, including reading proofread, generating story ideas, and critiquing manuscripts
• Fact-checking a small number of stories
• Writing the monthly Carolina Calendar for the website
• Working with the managing editor on special ancillary projects
This is a great entry-level opportunity and a chance to become part of a thriving North Carolina institution. Exceptional communication and organization skills required; degree in journalism and experience writing for a magazine or newspaper preferred. Candidates should have strong attention to detail with the ability to juggle multiple tasks at once. A passion for magazines and a strong understanding of the nuances of North Carolina culture are pluses.
